Fence-Board Cedar

From torn-down fences bound for the dump, Fence-Board Cedar finds new life at Salt Shaker Woodworks.

The Story

I’ve collected more than a few old cedar boards from fences that were torn down and replaced. Most were headed for the dump — stacked in piles by the curb, tossed in a trailer, or waiting in a construction dumpster. Some boards were clean, but most came full of nails, with rot at the bottom. I cut away the bad ends, pulled every nail, and stacked what was worth saving.

Salt Shaker Woodworks to the rescue… again. Maybe I should get myself a cape. And possibly a mask.

About the Tree

A tall cedar tree with wide spreading branches and dense green foliage, standing on a grassy hillside beneath a clear blue sky.

Cedar has long been a favorite in Texas for fence posts and pickets. Its natural oils make it resistant to decay and insects, which is why so many old cedar fences can stand for decades before needing to be replaced. The trees themselves are hardy, fast-growing, and common across the state, often sprouting wherever they find a bit of soil and sun.

About the Wood

Cedar has a look and smell all its own. Even boards pulled from old fences still carry that distinctive fragrance when cut or sanded. The wood is light in weight but surprisingly durable, with a warm color that ranges from pale cream to reddish brown. One of cedar’s natural strengths is how it absorbs water and then dries out without breaking down — the very reason it holds up outdoors for decades. Fence boards often bear the marks of their past life — nail holes, weathered edges, and sun-faded grain — giving each piece a character that can’t be bought at the lumberyard.

Why It Matters

Every board of Fence-Board Cedar carries more than weathered grain — it carries the story of rescue. These planks were torn from fences, piled for city pickup, or headed straight for the dump. Instead of being lost, they were pulled, trimmed, and saved for a second life.

Cedar itself is a reminder of endurance. Its oils let it withstand years of sun, rain, and weather without breaking down. Saving these boards keeps useful material out of the landfill and puts it back to work with purpose.
