Pine isn't usually my first choice for turning. Being a softwood, it has a tendency to tear out, which can make turning it a real headache. But when I put this piece of reclaimed, old-growth Higgins Longleaf Pine on the lathe, I'll be switched if it didn't turn just like a hardwood!
This wood is more than 500 years old, with tight growth rings that really show in the finished piece. Between the age of the wood, its strength, and the way it turned, something about it just said Marine Corps to me. So I inlaid the United States Marine Corps emblem in the top, and here it is. Semper Fi!
