Caring for Your Cutting Board: Simple Dos and Don’ts
Caring for a cutting board is simple, yet I’m always surprised how many folks don’t know the basics. So here’s a quick run-through that’ll help whether you’ve got a Salt Shaker Woodworks board or one from Walmart.
If you want your board to stay good-looking and not split at the seams, there are a few definite DOs and DON’Ts.
The DOs
Wash in hot water after each use.
That’s usually all you need. If you insist on soap, stick to mild and gentle
Oil your board regularly.
Use food-grade mineral oil. Wipe on enough to coat, let it soak for 24 hours, then buff off the extra.Once every 3 months for light use
Once a month if it sees heavy use (3–4 times a week) or gets washed with soap.
You can’t really over-oil, but you can waste oil by drowning it.
The DON’Ts
Don’t put your cutting board in the dishwasher.
Sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many folks do.
Don’t use a scrubbing pad of any kind.
Too harsh — it’ll scratch and dry the board.
Don’t use bleach or chemicals.
They strip out the natural oils and tannins that keep the board protected.
Don’t use soap unless you have to.
Wood naturally fights bacteria thanks to its tannins. Soap removes those tannins and the oils. If you just can’t help yourself, use a mild soap with a soft rag or sponge.
That’s it, y’all! Told you it was easy. Follow these steps and your cutting board will stay healthy, handsome, and ready to last for generations.
Until next time — stay safe and be kind to everyone you meet.
