Robles Black Walnut

Black Walnut is highly prized for its dark-colored, straight-grained, true heartwood. It is heavy, strong, shock resistant, and yet can be easily split and worked. Black walnut is one of the most durable hardwoods in the US. The wood holds its shape well after seasoning, which makes this wood even more attractive for woodworking. The eastern American Black Walnut is a species in the walnut family, native to North America. It grows mostly along rivers or streams, from southern Ontario, west to southeast South Dakota, south to Georgia, northern Florida, and southwest to central Texas. Wild trees in the upper Ottawa Valley may be an isolated native population or may have derived from planted trees.

Mr. Robles, for whom this wood has been named, owns a tree service company and has taken care of the trees on my property here in Seguin, Texas for several years, including removing two big pecan trees. He does incredibly good work for a very fair price. I contacted Mr. Robles to ask him if he could bring me limbs from trees he trimmed provided they were large enough in diameter for my purposes and a species I was interested in. For Mr. Robles, it means his workers have to make a few extra cuts and drop the wood off at my shop instead of hauling it to the dump and paying a fee or hauling it to his property in the country and burning it.
